Are you an artist looking for space to work downtown Durham?
We are setting up the large back room of our space at 407 N. Mangum as an “open-air” studio for 6 (max) artist. Each artist will have a section of this room to make their own. The idea is that our artist members will be able to gain momentum by being around other working artists, offer advice and critique to one another, and have the potential to collaborate on projects across mediums and fields.
Not having walls changes a lot. The way we work, the energy in our work, and the visual excitement in a room full of the mess and smell of art-making all come together in our artist studio to spark motivation and encourage risk-taking.
On top of the studio space, we are planning to offer our artist members a lot of great programming and community-involvement opportunities as well.
Mercury Studio believes believes that for an artist to work within a community of artists is a powerful thing. We want to push that community beyond the walls of our space by offering special satellite memberships to artists in the community. Maybe you have a studio space already or aren’t ready to move out of your home studio. This $25/month membership provides artists the opportunity to connect with other artists once a month for group critique, discussion, and activities.
We’re forming friendships with other centers for artists downtown, like The Carrack Modern Art Gallery and HappyMess Studio, to help further connect all the wonderful things that are happening in Durham. We are excited about being a part of the Durham art scene! Contact us today if your business/group is interested in forming a relationship with Mercury Studio.
And, let’s not forget to mention: this weekend is the spring Durham Art Walk! Mercury Studio will be stationed in the Trotter Building on Geer Street. We’ll be available to talk about membership and answer any questions you have. We alsowill be touting some sweet custom handmade coaster by SeamHappy, delicious Monuts Donuts, and taking donations for our indiegogo fundraiser! Come by and see us Saturday from 10-5 or Sunday 1-5!
